On April 2, Cameron University’s Student Government held a campus-wide election for their officer positions: President, Vice-President and Treasurer.
Director of Campus Life Leslie Cothren sent the ballot through email to all Cameron students. For President, the candidates are current Senators Darius Morris, Greyson Basham and Treasurer Whitney Brown. In the Vice-Presidential campaign, the two candidates were Senator Cecelia Brown and Senator Kaysa Williams.
Representative Jose Olivo ran uncontested for the Treasurer position. Students cast a total of 269 votes in the SGA election. To be officially elected into the position, the candidate must receive 50 percent of the vote plus one.
Voters officially elected Olivo as Treasurer, and Cecilia Brown won the Vice-Presidency. In the Presidential election, SGA called a run-off due to no candidate fully receiving 50 percent of the vote; the two final candidates for the next election are Whitney Brown and Darius Morris. Brown is the current treasurer of SGA, and she has been a representative for SGA for the past year. She also represented the Student Alumni Association of which she is also an executive officer. Morris has been an SGA Senator for the past year. Morris said he also has been working with student housing for three years.
Both candidates have listed improvements that can be made at Cameron and in the student government. Morris said he wants to reach out to students to “figure out what they worry about, and what they want to see happen.”
Specifically, Morris said he loves the activity on campus, but he wants to see an increase in activities on campus due to their impact on student success. Brown said she seeks to fix some problems within SGA, such as apathy and the need for increased passion.
“I want to bring ideas,” she said, “and give people the information they can build upon in order to make change.”
Brown said she seeks improvements across campus, such as the need for American Sign Language as a possible foreign language option. In final remarks, Senator Morris spoke on his character, and said that he is “someone who’s dependable and someone who [students] can easily talk to… and someone who’s easily approachable.”
In her statement, Brown said: “I have [the] drive and passion for it,” and that she has “done a lot within the organization and outside the organization.” The run-off election ballot will be sent out via student email on April 16.
