Two weeks into the season the Aggie volleyball team stands at 2-6 after going 1-3 at the Midwestern State Invitational on Sept. 9-10 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The weekend started off with a loss for the Aggies as opponent Emporia State won the match in four sets (25-16, 14-25, 13-25, 16-25).
Aggie sophomore Jenna Gillean led the team in kills with 23 and assists with 27. After a 25-16 win in the first set the Aggies fell in three straight sets to drop the match.
The second match on Friday saw Southern Nazarene defeat the Aggies in straight sets (20-25, 22-25, 26-28). Gillean led the team in kills with 15, while freshman Gabrielle Lerma turned in 25 digs.
Saturday’s action pitted Cameron against Southeastern Oklahoma and St. Edwards. The Aggies took both matches to five sets, falling 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 9-15) against SE OK and winning 3-2 (10-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-13, 15-7) over St. Edward’s.
Against Southeastern Oklahoma, Lerma racked up eight kills to only one error and garnered 19 digs on the match. Gillean led the team with 19 kills and two blocks.
For the final match of the weekend Cameron competed against Texas based St. Edwards University. Hilltoppers Jaclyn Billie and Mikayla Parker dominated the first two sets up front, and Parker had a total of seven blocks versus the Aggies which forced many adjustments.
Down by two sets, the Aggies rallied in set three by scoring the first seven points off of freshman Haleigh McClain-Ward’s serving.
With that momentum, Cameron secured a 25-20 win.
Set four saw a role reversal for both teams; St. Edwards dominated set one, Cameron dominated set four.
In set five, Cameron began to pull ahead after garnering 13 points translating the lead to a win.
Team leaders for the weekend included Lerma with 83 digs and 33 kills in 4 matches and Jenna Gillean with 62 Kills over the same 4 matches.
Katrina Campbell, Hallee Faustner and Ania Keene also looked very good during their outings with all three finding their way to double digit numbers in kills and digs.
The Lady Aggies continue this week with their home opener versus West Texas A&M on Friday night at 5:30 pm.
