The Academic Advisement Center located on the first floor of North Shepler has recently added a new face to their staff. Emele Fleming started the first week in September as the centers newest advisement specialist.
“I am so excited to be here at Cameron,” Fleming said. “I have always loved an educational environment and I love helping people.”
Fleming is not originally from the Lawton or Oklahoma area, and neither she nor her fiance has family in this part of the country.
“My fiance and I just moved here in June from West Virginia,” Fleming said. “We relocated here because my fiance is one of the new Comanche County Memorial Emergency Medicine Residents. And so far we love Oklahoma.”
The majority of the students that Fleming will be advising in the upcoming semesters are those that have an interest or declared a major in Allied Health Studies or in Interdisciplinary Studies.
“I was very excited to know that I get to work with students that are going into careers such as Respiratory Therapy, Radiology Tech and Pre-Nursing,” Fleming said. “I feel like I can really help guide them and make sure that they know exactly what they are getting themselves into.”
Fleming has the qualifications and experience to help advise students that are interested in these areas. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 2010 from Shepherd University in West Virginia. She also spent over four years working in hospital emergency departments in West Virginia at both Charleston and Martinsburg. Fleming is now pursuing a Master’s Degree online in Nursing. She is undecided about whether she wants it to be a Nurse Practitioner or in Nursing Education.
“When I saw this opening I thought it would be a perfect fit for me,” Fleming said. “I want to help people get into nursing and other similar fields and find out information that they may not know. I want to encourage students and get them on track with their schedules and with any other concerns that they have.”
Fleming expressed much appreciation to the faculty and staff she has been in contact with since she came to Cameron.
“So far Cameron has been awesome,” Fleming said. “Honestly, everyone here has been so encouraging and friendly to me. Up to this point it has been a really amazing experience for me.”
Fleming did have some final advice she wanted to share with students at the university: “I want students to be successful, the most important thing that students can do is to try and stay motivated. If they can just stay motivated, then they will graduate and attain all of their goals”
