The Lady Aggies have experienced a bump in performance, riding their longest winning streak since the 2011 season.
The Black and Gold cruised through their last three matches after snapping a four-game losing streak with a win against Williams Baptist College.
The Aggies first took the court Oct. to earn their second conference win of the season by sweeping Texas A&M- Kingsville in straight sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-16. The victory marked the first time a Cameron team has swept a conference opponent at home since Oct. 25, 2011 against Eastern New Mexico.
For senior Rebecca Green, the win gave her team the boost it needed after close conference matches all season.
“It felt so good to finally sweep somebody in conference,” Green said. “We’ve played all these conference games and have taken them all to five [sets] and then it’s just a heartbreaker when we lose in five by like two points.”
Cameron returned to the court the following evening to extend their winning streak to three after defeating the University of Arkansas at Monticello in four sets 25-13, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22.
Four CU players ended the night with double digit kills against the Cotton Blossoms, led by Green who recorded 13. Both junior Kat Evans and redshirt freshman Kendra Adams performed 12 kills each and freshman Cristina Viera added 11 in addition to 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
ECU’s inefficiency marked the early parts of the first set. Five Tiger errors and two Aggie kills pulled the Black and Gold ahead 7-1. Cameron would hold the lead and win the set 25-23.
The second set started with a back and forth struggle for both teams before CU broke a 7-7 tie with a 7-1 run. The Aggies would win the set 25-17 with 16 kills and a .394 attack percentage while committing only three errors.
Adams and sophomore Paige Holt led the Black and Gold in the second slate. Adams notched five kills on the set while Holt added four kills of her own.
The Aggies rolled into the third set with an 8-2 run. A .282 attack percentage pushed the Aggies to the 25-20 set win and a sweep of ECU.
Three Lady Aggies knocked down four kills during the final set. Evans and Green joined Adams in the scoring outburst in the closing slate.
The win extended Cameron’s winning streak to four games and brought the Lady Aggie’s overall record to 9-7 on the season. The sweep was CU’s fourth on the season and third in the last four matches.
The Lady Aggies will hit the court next against Angelo State University on Oct. 17 in San Angelo, Texas.
