Cameron University President John McArthur hosted the annual freshman ice cream social from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Cameron House.

The annual event is a chance for the freshmen class to meet new friends, university vice presidents and President McArthur himself.

According to McArthur, the social is an opportunity for him to converse with students and see how well they are adapting to the university.

“We want our freshmen to feel welcome at Cameron,” McArthur said. “We ask them what have been your biggest surprises, what were your thoughts three months ago when you were in high school and what college is going to be like. We like to see if it’s met their expectations and it also gives me a chance to eat ice cream.”

The social is the sixth that McArthur has attended, but only his second as president and first at Cameron House. Last year the event was held in the CETES courtyard because the house’s windows were being replaced. As a result, the McArthur’s did not move in until late September.
McArthur said he is glad the social is back to its original location because it shows students a piece of campus they may have never seen.

“We’ve done it on campus in the past, but here it’s home for me,” McArthur said. “A lot of students don’t get out to Cameron House so I thought it would be good for them to see this side of campus. It’s a less formal setting so I can ask questions and mingle and not have to be in a coat and tie.”
