The Lawton Community Theatre opens this year’s season with “Oliver!” at 8 p.m. on Oct.3-4. There will be a Sunday manatee at 2 p.m. that will continue Oct. 9-12. Admission for Cameron students is $5.
“Oliver!” is a musical about a little orphan boy who musters up enough courage to ask “more please” in an environment where it is uncommon to request seconds.
“Oliver!” is based on the novel “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens. In the show, Oliver works for an Artful Dodger named Fagin who has a group of pickpockets and meets a guy named Mr. Brownlow who he realizes is his grandfather.
“Oliver!” will feature songs such as “Consider Yourself,” “Food Glorious” and “As Long As He Needs Me” – music and lyrics by Lionel Bart.
Martha McCartney of the Lawton Community Theatre has a deep appreciation for “Oliver!” “I was in “Oliver!” 12 years ago and so was my granddaughter,”
McCartney said. “So “Oliver!” is a special thing to us.” Auditions for productions at LCT are open to the public with no experience needed. “We are constantly trying to promote theatre,” McCartney said.
Theatre Department Chair Scott Richard Klein will play the role of Fagin and said that Cameron tries to be really involved with the LCT when they are not putting on a production themselves.
Other productions in the upcoming months are “The Game’s Afoot”, “Love, Loss and What I Wore”, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Sweet Charity.”
For more information on “Oliver!” or any of the other productions, students can contact the LCT at 580-355-1600.
LTC is located at 1316 NW Bell Ave. in Lawton. The box office is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
