At 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 28 in the Howell Hall parking lot, Cameron University fraternity Sigma Tau Delta co-hosted the annual Trunk-or-Treat with Marie Detty’s New Directions.

The hosts wanted the event to raise awareness for domestic violence and sexual assault and to provide a safe and fun place for Lawton families and Cameron students to trunk-or-treat.

Multiple cars lined the parking lot with a variety of themes, including the Lawton Fire Department.

New Directions volunteers covered their cars with purple — the ribbon color of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Fourth grader Makayla said the Harry Potter trunk was her favorite.

“I love Harry Potter,” she said, “It was really cool to see that I’m not the only one.”

Another car had a Lion King theme, which a local Lawton mother said she loved.

“It was my son’s favorite, as well as mine,” she said, “The way the young girl did her make-up was outstanding.”

Car owners also presented Nerd candy, gumball machine and Toy Story trunk themes.

Volunteers brought a DJ booth, and attendees enjoyed visiting various food trucks.

A Marie Detty volunteer said the event was a success.

“I love seeing the kids’ faces light up and the happiness they radiate when they see what candy they got or a car in their favorite theme or cartoon,” the volunteer said.

“This event gives the community somewhere safe to have family fun, while also showing that there are resources for those in needed.”

Marie Detty’s New Directions offers help to those affected by domestic abuse, sexual violence and stalking.
